Uncommon Punctuation

An ellipsis looks like this: . . .

(The plural of ellipsis is ellipses).

Ellipses show that you have left out some words from the sentence.

  • So . . . what happened?
  • Um . . . I’m not sure that’s true.
  • You went to the restaurant. And . . . ?
  • But I thought we were meeting on Tuesday . . . ?

To properly make an ellipsis . . .

Key Point:

Do not make the mistake of thinking that an ellipsis is three dots without spaces, like this:

  • He said, "I don't know what to do..."

That's wrong! Put a space between your dots, like this:

  • He said, "I don't know what to do . . . "

Also, put a space before the first dot, and after the last dot!
