Ancient Egypt and the Nile River

Ancient Egypt is one of the world's oldest civilizations. It grew up on the banks of the Nile River.

The Nile provided the ancient Egyptians with water for drinking and irrigation.

It was also important for transportation.

Furthermore, every year, the Nile floods its banks, replenishing the soil.

 

 

The Nile was the "lifeblood" of Ancient Egypt.

Answers:

  • The Nile River flows from south to north. (Rivers always flow downhill, from the mountains to the sea).
  • Southern Egypt is the "uphill" side of the country. From there, the Nile flows downhill, through Lower Egypt, before finally emptying into the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Today (as in the past), 95% of Egyptians live within a few miles of the Nile.
