Narrative Writing

Introduction

A "narrative" is a story, and in this unit you're going to learn how to tell a good story. You're also going to write a short story of your own.

The Writing Process

Some writers plan their stories in great detail, before they begin to write. Others take the opposite approach; they start to write without any clear idea of where their story might end up. For most of us, the writing process combines these two strategies.

The lessons in this unit will help you plan your story. But don't wait until the planning is done before you start to write. Start your story right away. Then, as you complete each lesson, ask yourself: What did I learn in this lesson that I can use to make my story even better? And then be prepared to go back and revise your work.

Milestones

A milestone is a stone set up beside a road to mark the distance in miles to a particular place.

Here are the major milestones of this unit.
