The 7-Step Formula

Your Works Cited page comes at the end of your paper, but it is one of the first things that you are going to work on. That is because—as you do your research—you will want to keep track of your sources. Each time you find a source that you think you might want to use, add it to your Works Cited page. Do this with the 7-step formula. 

The “7 Steps” are the seven pieces of information that you must include. Furthermore, you must include them in this specific order:

    1. Author’s Name
    2. “Title of Article.”
    3. Website
    4. Date of Article
    5. Web
    6. Date You Accessed the Article
    7. URL


There is an article online called “Friendly Dictators.” Let’s assume that I want to use this article as a source for a paper I’m writing. The first thing I’m going to do is collect the following seven pieces of information:

1 Author's Name Bernstein, Dennis.
2 "Title of Article" "Friendly Dictators."
3 Website Third World Traveler.
4 Date of Article 1995.
5 Web Web.
6 Date I Accessed the Article 26 Nov. 2010.
7 URL <
