Introduction

Literature can be loosely defined as "famous books that have withstood the test of time."

What makes a book great? That's a matter of opinion, of course. That said, there are many things that great books have in common.

By studying these things, we gain a greater appreciation of the books that we read. We can also incorporate into our own writing some of the things that make famous books so memorable.

A literary term is a word we use when analyzing literature. There are hundreds of them in all, and you can find lists of them on the internet. This unit covers the most important ones.
