Understanding Your Grade on Synergy

The only grade that you'll see on Synergy is your overall grade for this class. Like most grades, it's a fraction:

Total Points That You Have Earned
Total Points That I Have Assigned

The top number (the numerator) is the same as the numerator of your "Overall score" on your Quia Homepage. In other words, it's the total number of points that you have earned by doing Quia quizzes (and by completing lessons on Typing Club).

The bottom number (the denominator) increases every week, as each week I assign more work.

Let's work through an example together.

The table below shows all the work that I've asked you to do since the first day of class. In the last column, you can see the number of points that you earned, assuming that you successfully completed each assignment.

# Lesson Assignment Points Earned

0

Introduction

I didn't ask you to do anything except read the lesson.

0
1

Synergy and Gmail

I asked you to send me an email, but this was an ungraded assignment.

0
2

Quia

I asked you to test your Quia password, but this, too, was an ungraded assignment.

3

Multiple-Choice Quizzes

You did a 10-question quiz on the difference between its and it's. That's 10 possible points.

4

Free Response Quizzes

I asked you to write 5–10 sentences telling me a bit about yourself. This assignment was also worth 10 points.

5

Typing Club

I asked you to do lessons 1–5 on Typing Club. Assuming that you earned at least one star on lessons 4 and 5, you earned at least 2 points.

6

The Importance of Typing Properly

I asked you to do lessons 6–10 on Typing Club. By earning at least one star on each of these lessons, you earned at least 5 more ponts.

7

Understanding Your Quia Homepage

The quiz at the end of the lesson was 10 questions long. That's 10 possible points.

8

Rule of Thumb

The 4-question quiz at the end of the lesson gave you a chance to earn four more points.

9

Family Background

I asked you to write about your family background. Assuming you wrote about 100 words, that's 10 points.

Paragraph Styles

I asked you to write a few paragraphs about your favorite sport. Assuming you formatted your paragraphs correctly (in internet style), you earned another 10 points.

Total Possible Points 61

Adding it all up, you can see that—up to this point in time—I have assigned 61 points. Therefore, if I were to update my grades on Synergy right now, I would use 61 as the denominator. (You can think of the denominator as the number of points that an A+ student would have earned by now).

Thus—at this moment in time—your Synergy score looks like this:

Number of Points That You Have Earned
61

This percentage determines your letter grade, in accordance with SFUSD's grading policy:

Greater than 90%

A

80–89%

B

70–79%

C

60–69%

D

Less than 60%

F

As the trimester progresses, the denominator of your score on Synergy will continue to increase (because I will continue to assign more work). By the end of the trimester, your score might look something like this:

Total Points You Have Earned
÷
Total Points That I Have Assigned

Percentage

Grade

750

1,000
75%
