Family Background

In this lesson, I'm going to give you another written assignment. The purpose of this assignment is twofold:

  1. I want to get to know you better.
  2. I want you to learn what 100 words looks like.

Instructions for the Quiz

Tell me about your family background. You can use the following questions to guide you:

For this assignment, I'm going to grade you according to my rule of thumb:

That doesn't mean that you need to write a long answer. In fact, for this particular assignment, I'd prefer that you give me an answer that is roughly 100 words. (I just want to give you a "feel" for what it's like to write 100 words).

Here is a sample answer that is 97 words long (and thus it's worth about 10 points). It's what I wrote about my own family background.

My mother's family was originally from Belgium. When my mother was only six years old, World War II broke out in Europe, and Germany invaded Belgium. Her family went through some frightening times during the war. For example, one time their house was bombed and they lost everything. Luckily, the family was out shopping at the time, so none of them were hurt.

My father's family comes from Massachusetts. His family owned a lovely farm in the country. I used to love spending Christmas vacations there when I was young. It was especially pretty when it snowed.

You're going to submit your answer using Quia, so click on the quiz at the bottom of this page when you're ready to start writing.

When writing in a Quia text box, you can resize the box by pulling on the bottom-right corner. (It's easier to do if you have a mouse).
