Phrases 1–5 (Review)

You have learned to recognize five different types of phrases:

Prepositional

  • The bracelet in the storefront window is beautiful.
  • We stayed at the cabin.

Appositive

  • My dog, a large German shepherd, likes to go for walks in the park.
  • Donald Trump, the president of the United States, wants to build a wall between the United States and Mexico.

Gerund

  • Blowing bubbles is a fun activity for children.
  • Ethan narrowly avoided driving off the cliff.

Participial

  • present
  • past
  • Holding the flashlight steadily, Jenny approached the strange creature. (present)
  • Kenneth nervously watched the woman, alarmed by her large gun. (past)

Absolute

  • Helen stood on the edge of the cliff, her hair blowing in the wind.
  • Craig scowled dangerously, his hand on his sword.
