Simplifying Sentences with Participial Phrases

There are two kinds of participial phrases:

• Present:
  • Shivering, Maria ran out of the rain and into the house.
• Past:
  • Frightened by the loud fireworks, the dog hid under the couch.

Both types of participial phrases can always be canceled or ignored.

1	Twirling her hair, Elvira sat at the computer.	intransitive (SV)
2	The pirate captain walked across the deck, yelling orders at his crew.	intransitive (SV)
3	Kenneth nervously watched the woman, alarmed by her large gun.	transitive (SVO)
4	Shocked at the size of the fish, the man dropped his pole into the water.	transitive (SVO)
