Sentence Patterns 1–5

You have learned to recognize five different sentence patterns:

Simple

  • I studied English.
  • Wilbert is a jerk.

Compound

  • I studied English, and Sonya studied German.
  • Lucy is a teacher; Tom is a nurse.

Hybrid

  • Irvin cooked dinner and washed the dishes.
  • Beverly washed her face and combed her hair.

Complex

  • While Irvin cooked dinner, Olivia set the table.
  • We ate toast because we were hungry.

Compound-Complex

  • If Brandon joins the team, we will have fun, and we might win some games.
  • The test was hard, but I did well, because I studied last night.
