Prefixes: Co- and Sub-

There are two kinds of conjunctions:

• coordinating conjunctions
• subordinating conjunctions

The prefixes "co-" and "sub-" have the following meanings:

co-	=	together; of equal rank. co-worker co-owner co-author co-pilot codependent
sub-	=	under; below; beneath. submarine (below the sea) subterranean (below the earth) substandard (below standard) subordinate (a person of lower rank; inferior)

 

• Coordinating conjunctions join clauses "of equal rank."
• Subordinating conjunctions introduce clauses that are "below" or "inferior to" the main clause.
