Practice with Semicolons: Contrast

Sentences with semicolons are useful for showing contrast, as in the following examples:

  • I like coffee; my wife likes tea.
  • John went to New York; Linda went to Paris.
  • Hawaii is hot; Canada is cold.
  • My room is tidy; my sister's room is a mess.
  • Rabbits are fast; turtles are slow.

In this lesson, you're going to practice writing such sentences on your own.

Instructions for the Quiz

Write five sentences, using the pattern you learned in this lesson. (Two contrasting clauses, separated by a semicolon). Put each sentence on a separate line.
