Formatting Dialogue

Introduction

A dialogue is a conversation between two people. Good dialogues are fun to read—and hopefully you'll write plenty of good ones this year. But that's not the purpose of this unit. In this unit, we're simply going to tackle the nuts and bolts of punctuation and formatting.

For example, take a look at the comic strip on the right. How would you include those lines of dialogue in your story? I might write them something like this:

Jim froze. "What . . . what are you doing?" he stammered.

Dr. Smith's face was grim. "It should be quite obvious," he answered in a calm but deadly voice. "I am holding a gun."

You'll have a chance to write similar dialogues yourself. But first, let's learn how to format dialogue correctly.
