Formatting Dialogue

Formatting Dialogue (1)

A conversation is like a ping-pong match. One person hits the ball, and then the other person hits the ball.

On the written page, each time a person hits the ball, start a new paragraph!

Wrong Correct

Brad said, "I'm hungry." Jill said, "You can eat my sandwich." Bill asked, "What kind is it?" Jill answered, "It's peanut butter and jelly."

Brad said, "I'm hungry."

Jill said, "You can eat my sandwich."

Bill asked, "What kind is it?"

Jill answered, "It's peanut butter and jelly."

Each time the ball flies over the net, hit the "Enter" key twice (assuming, of course, that you are formatting your paragraphs in "internet style").

It's really very much like a script, except that you're adding tags and quotation marks.

Instructions for the Quiz

  1. Login to the quiz.
  2. You will see a long paragraph of dialogue that is formatted incorrectly.
  3. Copy/paste that block of text into the answer box.
  4. Your job is to fix the mistakes by inserting a blank line between each speaker.
  5. Note: Each line of dialogue starts with a tag. Therefore, if you do this correctly, each new paragraph (line of dialogue) should look something like this:
    • [Someone] said, "________."
