Clean Up Your Block Quote
Use the following checklist to make sure your block quote is formatted correctly.
Lesson Steps
|

Block quotes should be indented 1" from the left margin. Here is how you do it:
- Select your block quote.
- Look for the ruler bar at the top of your document.
- You will see a little rectangle and below the little rectangle you will see an upside-down triangle.
- With your block quote still selected, grab the triangle with your mouse and slide it over to the 1" mark.

Fix it!
- Block quotes do NOT get put in quotation marks.
|
 |
3 |
Did you indent the first line of your block quote?
Fix it!
- Block quotes get an even left margin. (Do not indent the first line of a block quote more than the rest of the block quote).
|
 |
4 |
Did you punctuate your parenthetical citation correctly?
- Block quotes get punctuated differently from in-line quotes.
- For in-line quotes, the final period goes after the parentheses.
- For block quotes, the final period comes before the parentheses.
Study the differences in punctuation:
- "This is an in-line quote" (Johnson).
- This is a block quote. (Johnson)
