Look at the following sentences.

I'm and don't are contractions; they are "short forms" of the words "I am" and "do not".

We form contractions by smushing words together, taking out a letter or two, and replacing the missing letters with an apostrophe.

For example:

In this example, the apostrophe replaces the missing "a" in the word "am".

Here is another example:

In this case, the apostrophe replaces the "o" in the word "not".
